Plumber in McHenry, IL

McHenry is the largest city in the county's northern half and one of its oldest, with a downtown along Green Street that predates most of what surrounds it and a riverfront that has been a draw for well over a century.

That age shows up in the plumbing. The older neighborhoods near downtown and the river have the county's fuller collection of legacy materials — cast iron stacks, clay laterals, galvanized supply, and additions plumbed across many decades. Meanwhile the subdivisions that spread west and south through the 1990s and 2000s are a different world entirely.

We work throughout the city, and the first thing we establish on any McHenry job is which of those two cities we are in.

River proximity and older infrastructure

Homes near the Fox River and toward the Chain O' Lakes deal with elevated groundwater and, in some spots, seasonal flood risk. Sump capacity and backup are the priority there, and discharge routing has to account for ground that is already saturated.

In the older neighborhoods, the recurring issue is sewer laterals. Clay tile with many joints, mature trees above them, and decades of settling in clay soil. Repeat backups on an annual or biennial cycle are the classic signature, and a camera inspection is the only way to know whether you are managing roots or looking at a failed section.

Water hardness here is in the same extremely hard range as the rest of the county, with the same consequences for water heaters, softeners and fixtures.

Two very different housing stocks

Downtown-adjacent and riverfront homes: expect legacy materials and a lot of accumulated modification. These are the properties where a pre-purchase sewer camera is genuinely valuable, and where repiping conversations happen.

Western and southern subdivisions from the 1990s and 2000s: copper and PVC, structurally sound, now facing the equipment-age wave. Original water heaters, sump pumps and builder-grade softeners all reaching end of life at roughly the same time.

Both groups share the same water, which means both groups benefit from the same treatment conversation — it just arrives via different symptoms.

Why McHenry homeowners call us

  • We diagnose by neighborhood, not by zip code

A downtown McHenry house and a Legend Lakes house need completely different first questions. We ask the right ones.

  • Camera-first on older laterals

Clay tile under mature trees is the county's most common expensive surprise. We look before quoting anything.

  • Riverfront sump planning

Elevated groundwater near the Fox and the Chain calls for capacity and redundancy, not a builder-grade pump.

Matt did a great job of rebuilding our existing pond in the waterfall area, creating a stream 3 steps high. The pond, about 8' x 18' has never looked more beautiful. He took the existing falls area and curved it to flow down a new mound which he created and added some additional boulders and slabs to enhance the look. We absolutely love it. Beautiful and peaceful. Matt was very professional and his training from Aquascape was very evident along with his plumbing background. His price was fair and his work was well done. We also had Matt clean the pond first and he did an excellent job of that as well. He rearranged the rocks after washing them and cleaning debris from the pond. The fish were kept in a large portable pool using the water from the pond (to prevent fish from being overly shocked) while he and another guy did the cleanout. He also treated the pond with healthy bacteria. Matt was prompt and got the job done in one day.

Plumbing questions from McHenry

How do I know if my McHenry sewer line has roots?

The pattern is repeat backups every year or two, often worse in spring, in a home with mature trees near the line. A camera inspection confirms it in minutes and shows exactly which joint the roots are entering through, which determines whether you need maintenance, a spot repair, or a liner.

Are homes near the Fox River in McHenry more prone to basement water?

Generally yes. Groundwater near the river and the Chain O' Lakes rises with surface water levels, so pits work harder and longer. Capacity, a reliable backup and well-routed discharge matter more there than in the inland subdivisions.

Is McHenry within your service area?

Yes, comfortably. It is about twenty minutes from our shop in Lake in the Hills and it is a regular part of our week, including for emergency calls.
