A lot of the housing started life seasonal. Cottages close to the water, built before anyone was thinking about January, later insulated and converted for full-time living with varying degrees of thoroughness. That constant duty shortens pump life considerably. A pump rated for seven to ten years of average duty is doing double the cycles, and it wears out on that schedule. Discharge routing needs thought too. On a lot where the water table is already high, dumping sump discharge a few feet from the foundation just recirculates it. Getting it away from the house is half of the solution.

These are findable in advance. On a fall visit we walk the unheated and semi-heated spaces, identify which runs are exposed, and either insulate them properly or reroute them into conditioned space. It is far cheaper than the January version of the same conversation.

The other common feature of converted homes is layered plumbing from multiple eras. Galvanized originals, copper repairs, PEX additions, and dissimilar-metal connections corroding where they meet. Diagnosis beats assumption every time in this housing stock.
