5. Set it properly
New wax ring or gasket every time, closet bolts torqued evenly and not overtightened, new supply line rather than a reused one, and the base sealed correctly at the floor.
6. Test and adjust
Multiple flushes, water level set to the fill line, handle travel adjusted, and a paper towel run around the base and the supply connection to catch any weep a hand would miss.
The food colouring test — do this today
Put a few drops of food colouring into the tank of every toilet in the house. Do not flush. Come back in twenty minutes and look in the bowl.
If there is colour in the bowl, that toilet is leaking from tank to bowl continuously. It is the cheapest diagnostic in plumbing and it catches the single most common source of an unexplained water bill in this village.
